A Message to Garcia Takeaway
I believe that, in A Message to Garcia by Elbert Hubbard, Hubbard was trying to enlighten people and help them see how bad society was back in 1899, and, even though he didn't know so, it is specially true now. The people in the society stooped working as hard now, they leave the work to the machines, and those who work genuinely don't succeed, at least not as easily. As he had written: "Slipshod assistance, foolish inattention, dowdy indifference, and half-hearted work seem the rule; and no man succeeds, unless by hook or crook, or threat, he forces or bribes other men to assist him". And that the man that actually tries hard is a well valued man, the type of man that the society really needs.
And I believe that Mr. Schick gave us this assignment as a way to tell us to work hard, because even though some people believe otherwise, the grades, and attitude during freshman year are crucial in order to have a good resume while applying to university. To make us follow the Patriot way, to be hard workers, to be good citizens, to be good people. That is my takeaway of the reading A Message to Garcia.
Good analysis of the essay, Gia. Keep up the great work!
