b.Class Notes #7

Today we had our first pop quiz. I wish I could say that for some strange reason I had studied everything that was in the quiz, but I didn't. I feel like I failed it, literally. I know I had like 5 right, and then the other ones... Well, I got at least 3 wrong. I forgot the difference between latitude and longitude. And that messed me up with the parallels and meridians. I thought the Equator was measured as longitude, not latitude. I thought that, since the Earth is long around, it would be longitude. And, because of the same thought process, I also messed up the International Date Line question 😞 I am literally as disappointed as that emoji.
Later we took some notes, the highlight of the class.

Region: A Unique Area
  • Geographers identify three types of regions.
    1. Formal region (aka uniform region or homogeneous region).
      • An area in which everyone shares one or more distinctive characteristics in common.
        • Examples: common language, economic activity, or climate.
        • Characteristic may not be predominant rather than universal.
    2. Functional region (aka nodal region).
      • An area that is organized around a focused point; an area whose focus revolves around a certain point.
        • The characteristic chosen to define a functional region dominates at a central focus or node and diminishes in importance outward.
        • Example: circulation of newspaper, such as the New York Times.
