Why do immigrants face challenges? (continued)

PART II

  • brain chain is a large-scale emigration by talented people.
  • chain migration is the migration of people to a specific location because relatives or other members of the same nationality migrated there.
  • migration policies disputes:
    • border patrols - Americans would like more effective border patrols so fewer unauthorized immigrants can get into the US, but don't want to see their money being spent for wall construction.
    • workplace - most Americans recognize that unauthorized immigrants take jobs no one else would, so they support some kind of work-related program to make them legal.
      • most Americans support a path to US citizenship for unauthorized immigrants.
    • civil rights - Americans fear that enforcement of  unauthorized immigration is a federal government responsibility and don't support the use of local enforcement officials to find unauthorized immigrants
      • although residents of states closer to the Mexican border favor tougher enforcement.
    • the strongest state initiative has been Arizona's 2010 law that obligated local law enforcement officials to determine a person's immigration status.
  • guest workers are immigrants from poorer countries that were allowed to immigrate temporarily to obtain jobs.
  • circular migration is the temporary movement of a migrant worker between home and host countries to seek employment.
  • 8% of Europe's population is composed of immigrants.
    • 4% migrate from other European countries and 4% from countries outside of Europe.
    • it is a higher percentage in North America (13%), and an even higher percentage in Canada (21%).
  • the inhospitable aura in Europe is ironic because it was the source of most emigrants, especially during the 1800s.
